A tall hand-coiled ceramic vase in brown and grey with white-and-brown patchwork detail at the base, made in our Scottish studio. Approximately 28 cm tall, finished with the maker’s signature stamp.
The making: Hand-built from grey clay using the coiling technique — rope after rope of clay smoothed up the wall to build the form, leaving visible coil ridges across the upper two-thirds. The lower third carries a hand-painted patchwork in white and brown slip, and the inside is glazed white so the vase can hold water. Fired to 1240°C, which is high enough to make the body durable for everyday use.
How it looks: A rich warm-brown glaze on the coiled upper section sits against the natural grey clay where the brown has been left off. The bottom third is broken into rough patchwork squares of white and brown slip — a hand-painted quilt at the base that grounds the piece. The visible coils give the upper half a tactile, almost basket-weave rhythm.
