A handmade ceramic Dala horse in white clay finished in a turquoise crackle glaze, made by hand in our Scottish studio.
The making: The classic Swedish Dala horse silhouette is cut and built from white clay using the slabbing technique — flat sheets shaped by hand rather than thrown on a wheel. After the first firing, a turquoise crackle glaze is brushed across the front and back. As it cools after the second firing, the glaze forms a fine network of crackle lines across the surface, no two patterns alike.
How it looks: A 19 cm wide, 20 cm tall horse standing about 4.5 cm deep — the recognisable folk-art silhouette, in a calm turquoise that sits between sea green and blue. The crackle network is visible up close: thin dark lines threading across the glossy glaze, catching the light. White clay shows at the cut edges where the glaze thins.
Use it for:
- Sitting on a mantelpiece or low bookshelf as a sculptural piece
- A folk-art accent on a hallway console table
- Displayed beside other Dala horses for a small collection wall
- A Christmas or December decoration that earns its place year-round
- Given to someone with Swedish heritage or a love of Scandinavian design
A considered gift for a folk-art collector, a Scandinavian-design lover, or a new homeowner setting a calm shelf — housewarmings, weddings, Christmas, or simply because.
Care: Dust with a soft cloth. Wipe clean with a damp cloth if needed. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives — they can damage crackle glaze.
Size:
- Width 19 cm • Height 20 cm • Depth 4.5 cm
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
