A handmade ceramic vessel finished in ivory slip with a folk-art floral motif and a bead-rimmed graphite band, made in our workshop in Scotland.
The making. The piece is hand-built rather than thrown, which leaves it with a slightly irregular, organic shape that records the process. It is finished with an ivory slip and gently distressed at the surface to give the body depth and a rustic, time-worn texture before it is decorated. A small folklore-inspired floral motif is hand-drawn and painted at the front. Around the rim, a band of textured graphite glaze is set with small ceramic beads in soft green and blue. The interior is fully glazed so the piece holds water for fresh stems.
How it looks and feels. The body reads as a quiet, chalky ivory with the slight irregularities of the building showing as soft ridges under the slip. The folk floral sits forward like a hand-drawn vignette, set against the muted ground; the graphite rim provides a darker, weightier contrast, and the small green and blue beads catch as accents rather than ornament. The clay has a low, matte sheen across most of the body.
