A handmade single-stem vase in rustic terracotta, slab-built and finished in two whites — glossy inside, matte outside.
The making: Built in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay using the slab technique — rolled out, cut to shape, joined with slip and hand-shaped before a first firing. The interior is glazed in glossy white for water-tightness, while the exterior carries a softer, rustic matte off-white glaze. Kiln-fired again to fuse. The base carries the maker’s mark.
How it looks: Two whites in conversation — the glossy interior catches light when you peer in, while the matte exterior reads as quiet, chalky ivory in daylight. The slab seams remain just visible, and the warm terracotta breaks through at the rim where the glaze stops.
Use it for:
- A single tulip, ranunculus or branch on a windowsill
- Standing empty as a sculptural piece on a bookshelf or mantel
- A bedside table with a small spring stem
- A gift for someone redoing a flat in soft, calm colours
