A handmade single-stem terracotta vase, built in slabs and finished in a rustic mustard yellow glaze over a warm white interior.
The making: Slab-built in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay — rolled out, cut to shape, joined with slip and hand-shaped before a first firing. The interior is then glazed in glossy white for water-tightness, and the exterior brushed with a mustard yellow rustic glaze that holds a textured, almost matte finish. Kiln-fired again to fuse. The base carries the maker’s mark.
How it looks: The mustard yellow exterior is warm and a little dusty in the way an aged French textile is — not glossy, not flat, somewhere between the two. The glossy white interior peeks through the opening, and the slab seams stay visible enough to remind you it was built by hand. Light pools warm across the body in the late afternoon.
Use it for:
- A single sunflower, tulip or ranunculus on a kitchen windowsill
- A small sculptural piece on a shelf when empty
- A bedside table with a sprig of dried wheat or eucalyptus
- A gift for someone redoing a kitchen in warm yellows and ochres
- A hallway console or studio desk accent
A considered gift for the friend who buys flowers for themselves on a Friday — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scourers.
Size:
- 26 cm tall x 11 cm wide
- Watertight interior
- Maker’s mark on the base
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
