A handmade slab-built ceramic vase in white clay under a light green translucent glaze — slim enough for a single stem, with a quiet presence of its own.
The making: Built in our garden shed in Scotland from white clay using the slab technique — rolled out, cut to shape, joined with slip and hand-shaped before a first firing. A light green translucent glaze is then brushed across the whole piece and the vase is kiln-fired again to fuse it. Because the form is hand-built rather than thrown, no two pieces are identical.
How it looks: The white clay underneath reads as warm ivory; the translucent green glaze pools deeper in the hollows and clears across the high points, so the colour moves between celadon and pale eucalyptus depending on the light. The surface is glossy but uneven in the way only hand-built work is, with light catching where the slabs meet.
Use it for:
- Holding a single tulip, ranunculus or branch on a windowsill
- Standing empty as a quiet sculptural piece on a bookshelf or mantel
- A bedside table with a small spring stem
- A gift for someone redoing a flat in soft, calm colours
- An understated centrepiece for a side table or hallway console
A considered gift for the friend who buys flowers for themselves on a Friday — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scourers.
Size:
- 26 cm tall x 13 cm wide
- Watertight interior
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
