A handmade terracotta Dala horse vase in light blue reactive glaze, with a removable ceramic flower ‘crown’ that doubles as a plug when no stem is in.
The making: Hand-built in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay. The horse silhouette is shaped by hand, an opening cut in the back of the head to hold a single flower, and a separate ceramic flower ‘plug’ is hand-painted and fired. The interior is glazed white for water-tightness; the exterior is finished in a light blue reactive glaze that breaks brown along the carved edges. The piece is kiln-fired twice.
How it looks: The light blue exterior sits paler across the flat planes of the horse and breaks to a warm coffee brown along the curved edges of the back, legs and head. The white interior peeks through the head opening, and the removable ceramic flower crown adds a small painted accent at the top.
Use it for:
- Holding a single stem on a windowsill or shelf, with the flower crown set aside
- Standing as a sculptural piece with the ceramic crown in place
- A bookshelf accent between art books
- A gift for someone who collects Scandinavian folk art or handmade ceramics
- A child’s room or hallway console as something playful and storied
A considered gift for the friend who collects folk-art pieces — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap; handle the removable ceramic flower crown carefully.
Size:
- 20 cm tall x 19 cm wide x 5 cm deep
- Watertight interior
- Includes removable ceramic flower crown
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
