A handmade ceramic vase sculpted into the shape of a small car, with a removable roof piece studded with light blue ceramic flowers — a playful one-off built in our garden shed in Scotland.
The making: Slab-built from rustic terracotta clay — the body, bonnet, bumpers and wheels are cut, joined and shaped by hand. The interior is fully glazed in white so the open top holds water for fresh flowers, and the exterior detail is hand-painted in underglaze and sealed with a transparent glaze. The roof is sculpted separately, decorated with small ceramic flowers, and made to lift off.
How it looks: The car body sits in a deep dark teal, with hand-painted headlights in warm yellow and orange that catch the light against the glossy glaze. The removable roof is dotted with pale blue ceramic flowers — clip it on and the piece becomes a sculpture; lift it off and the open top becomes a vase for a small bouquet or a single tall stem.
Use it for:
- A centrepiece on a dining or coffee table with a small posy
- A sculptural shelf piece in a study or sitting room when the roof is on
- A whimsical bedroom or nursery accent
- A gift for a car enthusiast who already has the books and the prints
- A statement on a hallway console with seasonal blooms
A considered gift for the friend who’d rather have one strange handmade thing than a dozen sensible ones — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash only with mild soap and water; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing.
Size:
- 26 cm long x 11 cm wide x 14 cm tall
- Removable floral roof piece
- Watertight interior
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
