A handmade terracotta stoneware mug, slab-built and hand-scratched with a folk floral motif, made in our workshop in Scotland.
The making. Each mug is hand-built from rustic terracotta stoneware clay using the slab-building technique, which gives the piece a slightly organic, softly irregular form rather than the perfect symmetry of a wheel-thrown mug. The exterior is finished in ivory slip, into which a folklore-inspired flower is scratched by hand using sgraffito — the lines kept simple and expressive, closer to a child’s drawing than a draughted pattern. Subtle green and soft blue underglazes are added to the flower. The interior is glazed in a clean white finish and the handle in deep graphite grey, before the mug is kiln-fired and the maker’s logo stamped on the underside.
How it looks and feels. The exterior reads as a chalky ivory with the sgraffito flower drawn through it in warm terracotta linework; the green and blue accents sit quietly within the petals. The graphite-grey handle anchors the piece visually and is the dark counterweight to the pale body. The mug holds with a slight handmade weight, and you can feel the irregularities of the slabbed walls under your fingers.
Use it for:
- Morning coffee or an evening herbal tea, as part of an unhurried ritual
- The mug on the shelf you reach for first when guests arrive
- A handmade addition to a collection of mismatched pottery
- A gift for a friend who takes their coffee seriously
- Given to someone setting up their first proper kitchen
A considered gift for the slow-coffee drinker, the folk-art collector, or anyone who treats a morning cup as a small daily ceremony — housewarmings, birthdays, or simply because.
Hand wash recommended — avoid soaking or dishwasher. Food safe.
