A large handmade terracotta bowl, hand-coiled and carved with folk-style flowers in sgraffito, finished with heart-impressed graphite rim and a glossy white interior.
The making: Hand-coiled in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay — built up coil by coil rather than thrown, so the form has the slight irregularity that only hand-built work carries. The exterior is brushed with white slip, then the floral pattern is scratched through to the clay using the sgraffito technique and tinted with blue and green underglazes. The interior is sealed in a smooth white glaze. The rim is pressed with small heart impressions and painted in black graphite glaze before the final firing.
How it looks: The exterior reads as a chalky white slip ground with folk-style flowers carved through to the warm terracotta beneath, tinted in soft blue and green. The interior is a clean, glossy white — made for fruit, salad or pasta. The rim runs in a dark band of graphite black with the heart impressions catching shadow. The whole bowl reads as a piece of folk art that also happens to hold a kilo of oranges.

A considered gift for the friend who hosts properly — weddings, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap; avoid microwave and dishwasher to keep the carved finish sharp.
