A small handmade ceramic plate in rustic terracotta, hand-scratched with a folk-style flower in green and blue and finished with a graphite-grey rim — made in our Scottish studio.
The making: The plate is hand-shaped from rustic terracotta clay and brushed with a layer of white slip across the inside. While the slip is still leather-hard, a flower is scratched through by hand using the sgraffito technique, revealing the warm terracotta clay underneath. The scratched lines are filled with green and blue underglaze. The plate is bisque-fired, a transparent glaze brushed across the interior and a graphite-coloured glaze applied to the rim, then fired a second time. The base is stamped with our maker’s mark.
How it looks: A chalky ivory interior carved away to show the warm dusty-terracotta clay beneath — the flower drawn in soft sage green and forget-me-not blue. A deep graphite-grey band frames the rim. A glossy clear glaze gives the surface a soft shine; the back is fully glazed too.
Use it for:
- Serving small appetisers, olives or chocolate truffles at a dinner
- Resting rings and earrings on a bedside table or bathroom shelf
- Holding a candle and a few loose matches on a mantelpiece
- Displayed on a kitchen shelf with other handmade pieces
- A small wedding, anniversary or housewarming gift
A considered gift for someone who collects folk-art pottery or is moving into a new home — housewarmings, weddings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning tools.
