A handmade terracotta ceramic vase shaped like the Swedish Dala horse, with an opening cut into the saddle to hold a single stem or a small posy.
The making: Hand-built in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay. The horse is shaped by hand, the saddle opening cut to take water, the interior brushed with white glaze for water-tightness, and the exterior brushed with white slip before a folk-style design is carved through and sealed under a transparent glaze. Each piece is kiln-fired twice.
How it looks: The terracotta body sits in warm orange-brown, with the white-slipped exterior carved through to reveal the clay underneath in a simple Dala horse silhouette. The interior is matte white; the back curves into the rounded saddle, and the legs stand square and steady.
Use it for:
- Holding a single garden flower or wildflower stem on a kitchen windowsill
- A small dried posy on a hallway console
- Standing on a bookshelf as a sculptural piece between books
- A gift for someone who collects Scandinavian folk art or handmade ceramics
- Marking a quiet corner of a child’s room with something handmade and storied
A considered gift for the friend who notices the small things — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scourers.
Size:
- 21 cm tall, 20 cm wide, 5 cm deep
- Watertight interior
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
