A handmade terracotta pasta bowl, slab-built and hand-scratched with sgraffito florals, made in our workshop in Scotland.
The making. Each bowl is hand-built from rustic terracotta clay using the slabbing technique — sheets of clay cut to shape and joined by hand, sized for a single generous serving. A single foot rim is added at the base so the piece can be glazed on both sides. The interior is finished with a reactive glaze that pools from chalky white into a soft light blue, then deepens into a graphite-black band at the rim. The exterior is painted with an ivory slip and decorated using sgraffito — simple floral motifs scratched into the slip with a fine tool so the warm terracotta shows through as linework — before a transparent glaze is applied and the bowl is kiln-fired. Each piece carries the maker’s logo.
How it looks and feels. The interior moves between chalky white and light blue where the reactive glaze pools, then darkens at the rim. The exterior reads as drawn rather than printed — soft greens and blues laid against the warm terracotta linework. The glaze has a slight pooled texture where the colours shift, and the transparent finish gives the painted side a low, soft sheen.
Use it for:
- A single generous serving of pasta, ramen, or grain bowls at home
- Holding salad or a fruit course at a longer dinner
- Stacking with the matching serving bowl and plates for a full place setting
- A wedding or housewarming gift for someone who eats at home well
- Given to a friend who collects pieces from independent makers
A considered gift for the person who eats their meals at the table on purpose — weddings, housewarmings, or simply because.
Hand wash recommended — avoid soaking or dishwasher. Food safe.
