A small handmade ceramic mug in terracotta clay with a carved white floral pattern and a softly metallic glazed handle, made by hand in our Scottish studio.
The making: The body is hand-shaped from rustic terracotta clay and coated in a thick layer of white underglaze. While the slip is still leather-hard, the folk-style floral motif is scratched through by hand using the sgraffito technique — revealing the warm terracotta clay underneath. The mug is bisque-fired, then a transparent glaze is brushed over the body and a metallic-finish glaze applied to the handle. After a second firing the base is stamped with our maker’s mark.
How it looks: Chalky white slip carved away to show the warm dusty-terracotta clay beneath — the petals and leaves read almost like white-on-rust embroidery. Touches of cobalt blue sit in the flower centres. The handle catches the light with a soft bronze-metallic shine. The surface keeps a subtle hand-pressed texture under the glaze.
Use it for:
- A small morning coffee or strong espresso
- Loose-leaf herbal tea in the afternoon
- A bedside cup of water or warm milk
- Displayed empty on a kitchen shelf with other handmade ceramics
- A considered gift for someone who collects folk-art pottery
A considered gift for a coffee lover or someone setting up a new kitchen — birthdays, housewarmings, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash with mild soap. Avoid dishwasher and microwave to protect the metallic handle.
