A set of six handmade terracotta mugs with sgraffito flowers and metallic-glazed handles — slab-built in our Scottish workshop.
The making: Each mug is hand-built from rustic terracotta clay using the slabbing technique — the clay is rolled flat, cut, shaped around a form, and joined by hand. Flower motifs are scratched (sgraffito) through a layer of white slip into the terracotta beneath, then coloured with underglaze and oxides. The interior is finished with a clean white glaze for easy washing, and the handles get a rustic metallic glaze for contrast. Every mug carries the Fabode stamp on the base.
How it looks: Warm terracotta exteriors with a chalky white slip layer showing through the scratched flower designs — blues, yellows and natural earth tones picking out the petals. A clean white glaze inside; a darker metallic finish on each handle. Each of the six mugs is patterned differently, so the set looks gathered rather than uniform.
Use it for:
- Morning coffee or espresso — 0.25 L per mug holds a generous cup
- An afternoon tea, herbal infusion or hot chocolate
- Brought out together when friends come round so everyone gets a different mug
- Mixed into an existing collection rather than used as a matching set
- Gifted as a housewarming or birthday for a serious tea-or-coffee drinker
A considered gift for a friend who collects mugs rather than uses a matching set — housewarmings, birthdays, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash recommended; avoid the dishwasher.
Size:
- Capacity: 0.25 L per mug
- Set of 6 — each one a different flower design (you’ll receive a coordinated selection)
