A handmade terracotta jug that works equally as a water pitcher or a stand-out vase, carved with a band of folk flowers and finished in a reactive blue glaze that breaks darker on the texture.
The making: Slab-built in our garden shed in Scotland from rustic terracotta clay — the body, neck and large handle are formed by hand, then the middle band is carved with simple green and blue flowers using the sgraffito technique (scratching through a white slip layer to the clay below). The upper and lower bands are roughly carved for texture, and the handle is impressed with heart-shaped marks. Interior glazed glossy white, exterior in a reactive light blue, handle in graphite grey, and the whole piece kiln-fired.
How it looks: The light blue reactive glaze pools paler on the smooth body and breaks to a rich coffee brown across the carved texture above and below the floral band. The flowers themselves sit in soft green and blue against the white slip. The graphite grey handle is a dark, deliberate contrast — heart impressions catching shadow.
