A handmade ceramic soap dish in a deep brown glaze with a copper-finished rim — slab-built in our Whitburn, Scotland studio by Zoltan.
The making: Each dish is hand-built from light brown stoneware clay using the slab technique — clay rolled flat, cut into a round bowl, and formed with three small handle-shaped feet underneath to raise it off the surface. Nine drainage holes are pierced through the middle by hand before firing. After the first bisque firing the bowl is glazed in a rich dark brown across the body, with a copper-coloured glaze applied to the rim. A second firing at 1240°C seals the glaze and makes it waterproof.
How it looks: A deep warm brown that pools darker in the curves, with a band of burnt-copper running around the rim where the metallic glaze catches the light. The interior has nine little drainage holes punched through; underneath, three small handle-shaped feet lift the bowl about a centimetre clear of the worktop. The clay shows through faintly at the edges where the glaze breaks thinner.

- Holding a bar of soap by a kitchen sink or bathroom basin
- A small fruit bowl for berries, cherry tomatoes or grapes on a kitchen counter
- Resting kitchen sponges so they dry between washes
- A housewarming or new-bathroom gift
- Holding rings and small jewellery on a bedside table
