A small handmade ceramic hanging bird ornament — hand-rolled terracotta clay, carved with little hearts and flowers, finished in a partly wiped white glaze, made in our Scottish studio.
The making: Each bird begins as a rolled sheet of terracotta clay cut into shape by hand and carved with little hearts and flowers to give the bird texture and character. A nichrome hanging wire is pressed into the soft clay before firing. The bird is bisque fired, dipped in white glaze, then partially wiped back so the warm terracotta colour shows through — fired again to set the glaze. The maker’s mark is stamped on the back.
How it looks: Crisp chalk-white glaze sitting against warm dusty terracotta where the glaze has been wiped back. The carved hearts and flowers catch the white in the recesses, giving the bird a soft folk-art feel. A natural jute string is tied through the wire loop for hanging.
