A handmade ceramic vase in speckled yellow clay with a pressed floral pattern picked out in black, finished in a soft green crackle glaze — made in our Scottish studio. 13 cm tall.
The making: Hand-built using the coiling technique — long ropes of speckled yellow clay laid in rings and smoothed together one row at a time, rather than thrown on a wheel. The flower pattern is pressed into the soft clay and brushed with black underglaze so the design sits in the surface rather than on top. The whole piece is dipped in a light green crackle glaze inside and out and kiln-fired — the glaze settles into a fine network of crackle lines as it cools.
How it looks: A roundish, slightly squat vase about 13 cm tall and 13 cm wide at its widest. The base clay is warm yellow with darker speckles showing through the crackle glaze; the pressed flowers are picked out in black against the soft moss green. The crackle network gives the glaze an old-cottage-window feel — the kind of vase that looks like it’s been on a windowsill for years.
Use it for:
- Holding a small fresh bouquet — anemones, ranunculus, garden roses
- Displaying dried grasses, honesty pennies or dried hydrangea heads
- Sitting on a windowsill, mantelpiece or kitchen shelf even when empty
- A still-life centrepiece on a small dining or coffee table
- Gifted to a friend who buys themselves flowers
A considered gift for a flower-lover, someone who collects small ceramics, or a parent moving into a new home — housewarmings, birthdays, or simply because.
Care: Hand wash gently — avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives that could damage the crackle glaze.
Size:
- Height: approximately 13 cm. Width at widest point: approximately 13 cm.
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
