A 1.5-metre handmade ceramic garland of six autumn leaves with clay and oak beads, strung on hemp yarn — made in our Scottish studio by Marta and her husband Zoltan.
The making: Each leaf is shaped by rolling a real fallen leaf into stretched white clay so the veins press into the surface; the outlines are then hand-cut and edges smoothed. Once bisque-fired, the leaves are hand-painted in autumn colours with underglaze, sealed with a transparent glaze, and fired again to a glossy finish. Small clay beads are made in the same studio; the oak beads are turned by Zoltan in his workshop. Everything is strung together on a sturdy hemp yarn long enough to drape across a mantel.
How it looks: Six realistic leaves in shifting autumn tones — mossy green, mustard yellow, warm walnut brown — catch the light against the natural oak beads and pale hemp string. The pressed leaf veins are visible across the glaze, like the real leaves they were taken from.
