A large coiled ceramic bowl with a glossy white exterior, copper-glazed interior, and a hand-pierced hemp-laced rim — made from grey clay in our Scottish workshop.
The making: Built by hand using the coiling technique. Long ropes of grey stoneware clay are rolled and stacked into a wide, generous bowl, with the coil joins smoothed inside and out. Before firing, holes are pierced by hand around the rim. After kiln-firing, the outside is glazed glossy white and the inside is glazed in a warm copper. Natural hemp yarn is then threaded through the pierced rim as a soft, textural detail.
How it looks: A wide 30 cm bowl with a clean glossy white outer wall and a warm copper interior — the two glazes meet at the pierced rim where the hemp yarn loops through. The pierced holes are irregular and hand-made, so the hemp lacing reads as a stitched edge rather than a uniform border.
Use it for:
- A statement centrepiece on a long dining or kitchen table
- A fruit bowl with apples, lemons or pomegranates against the copper interior
- Filled with seasonal foliage (pinecones, dried hydrangeas) for autumn and winter
- On a sideboard as a sculptural object on its own
- Gifted as a significant wedding, milestone-birthday or new-home present
A considered gift for a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a friend moving into their forever home — the kind of piece they’ll keep on display rather than in a cupboard.
Care: Hand wash only — the hemp lacing and copper glaze do not belong in a dishwasher. Wipe gently with a soft cloth.
Size:
- Diameter: 30 cm across the rim
- Hand-pierced rim with hemp yarn detailing
- Handmade — small variations are part of the character
